In the beginning of December I had an opportunity to enjoy a wonderful Christmas Market in the beautiful city of Krakow, Poland. The Market was in operation until December 26th, so if any of you visited Krakow before that date, hopefully you found the time to browse the approximately 80 stands located in the city’s Main Square.
Christmas Market in the Main Square refers to the commercial tradition in this city from over a century ago, and it has been a part of the landscape of the pre-Christmas Krakow for a long time.
I couldn’t help but admire the beauty of the Main Square glittering in the glow of hundreds of Christmas lights. The 38 year old and 59 ft (18 m) Christmas Tree was brought to Krakow from Łabowiec near Nowy Sącz, and set in the vicinity of the Basilica Mariacka. The tree, dressed in white and blue lights, ribbons, candies and ornaments, will be displayed until almost the end of January 2018.
Krakow’s Christmas Market is extremely popular not only with the citizens of this amazing city, but also with the large number of tourists. The official closing date of the Market has been slated for December 26th, but when I spoke with the food vendors, I was assured that they will be offering their goodies until January 7, 2018.
The vendors were offering an impressive variety of merchandise and food items. From the colorful, hand painted Christmas ornaments to the beautiful winter clothing (hats, scarves, mitts, jackets), to plush and wooden toys, hand made Christmas tablecloths, original jewellery, and many more gift ideas, to a variety of delicious foods like grilled sausages, pork hocks and other grilled meats, grilled sheep cheese with cranberry sauce, gingerbread cookies and other sweets, to other Polish specialties including my favorite…a huge slice of the traditional village bread with homemade lard spread and a pickle…Yummy!
I really enjoyed listening to the festive music while admiring numerous garlands shimmering in the December evening with hundreds of lights, stretching from stand to stand, making shopping, dining or just browsing, a very special experience.
The amazing taste and smell of the grilled food shared with my cousin, the unique atmosphere of the Market, the artistic and beautiful merchandise, made this illuminated area of this historic city a place to be. A place to enjoy the company of your family and friends, a place with a special ambiance. I loved every minute of this very special event!
For all of you that didn’t have an opportunity to experience Christmas festivities in Krakow, there is always next year!!!
